Contact Your MP to Ban Cages for Hens

A severely feather-pecked hen lifts tries to stretch in an overcrowded cage.

2026 dawned with a new promise for farmed animals in the UK as Defra opened a consultation proposing a ban on cages for laying hens, pullets and breeder layers, admitting that they ‘do not fully provide for the physical and behavioural needs of laying hens.’

Almost a year later and Defra are still ‘analysing responses’.

All the while, over seven million hens remain trapped in cages across the UK – crammed into dark industrial sheds, row upon row, with less usable space than a sheet of A4 paper. They will never feel sunlight or breathe fresh air.

In these conditions, stress and frustration spill over into feather pecking and injury, until these intelligent, curious birds become a pale version of who they’re meant to be – all to push them into laying 20 to 30 times more eggs than they would naturally, for a product we simply don’t need.

We’re calling on the Government to legislate now and we need your help to apply pressure. Fill out the form below and the following letter will be sent to your MP today. It takes just 30 seconds.
