Warning Labels on Processed and Red Meat – People Deserve to Know

In 2015, the World Health Organisation (WHO) classified processed meat, such as bacon, ham and sausages, as a Group 1 carcinogen – meaning it causes cancer in humans. Red meat, including beef, pork and lamb, was classified as Group 2A – meaning probably carcinogenic.

These conclusions came after decades of global research by leading scientists. Yet, most people remain unaware of the serious health risks linked to meat.

Just like cigarette packaging, processed and red meat products should carry clear health warnings – so consumers can make informed choices. A simple label stating “May Cause Cancer” could help raise awareness and protect public health.

We are calling on the UK Government to make this a legal requirement.
