It’s not a sport often talked about but vegan Emma Garcia, 25, from Spain, has just taken a gold medal in the World Aquatics Artistic Swimming World Cup 2024.

Last year she earned a silver medal in the Mixed Duet Technical but this year, she and her swimming partner, Dennis Gonzalez Boneu, grabbed the gold in Budapest for the Mixed Duet Free category.

The duo took to the water on 6th July 2024 and impressed the judges with the difficulty level, their artistic interpretation and execution. They finished with over 213 points and a convincing win.

The “vegan mermaid” transitioned to a vegan diet in 2021. She told Great Vegan Athletes:

“I randomly started seeing some videos and thinking about the industry, and starting relating the animals with the food. Then I researched about all the industry and the impact and being conscious about what is behind our food and clothes, especially. I felt it wasn’t me, I never could do that to any animal so I decided to not contribute to that by being vegan.”
