Our oceans are being emptied at an alarming rate. Industrial overfishing, bottom trawling and other destructive fishing practices are devastating marine life and pushing entire species to the brink of collapse.
These same destructive practices also contribute significantly to the growing crisis of plastic pollution in our oceans. Discarded fishing nets, also known as ‘ghost nets’, make up a major portion of the plastic waste choking marine ecosystems. These nets continue to entangle and kill marine animals long after they are abandoned, causing immense, lasting harm to ocean life.
If we don’t act now, vital ocean ecosystems will be lost – along with the billions of people and wildlife who depend on them. Scientists warn that by 2030, at least 30 per cent of the world’s oceans must be properly protected from exploitation to give marine life a chance to recover.
Yet right now, only 3 per cent of our oceans are effectively protected – while powerful fishing fleets continue to plunder the seas and their discarded nets silently poison marine habitats.
It’s time for Prime Minister Keir Starmer to act.
