Cillian Murphy is a highly acclaimed Irish actor. He first became widely known for starring in Danny Boyle’s apocalyptic horror film 28 Days Later (2002), and later portrayed Dr Jonathan Crane (Scarecrow) in Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins (2005). He became a household name for his portrayal of Tommy Shelby in the BBC period drama Peaky Blinders. In 2023, Murphy reunited with Nolan to play the title role in Oppenheimer, a performance that earned him the Academy Award for Best Actor at the 2024 Oscars.

Murphy has spoken publicly about reducing and removing animal products from his diet over the years. He has said he was vegetarian for a long period, originally prompted by concerns around BSE, and in a 2022 interview he described returning to vegetarianism. More recently, in 2024 he said he was “trying the vegan thing”, linking his choice to environmental reasons as well as health, and saying he does not miss meat.

By speaking openly about eating more plant-based, Murphy helps normalize vegan choices and shows how changing what is on your plate can be a meaningful step towards living with greater compassion and a lower impact.

“I’ve been trying the vegan thing… [for] both [health and ethics] now… I just think it’s better for the planet.”

“I don’t miss the meat. I’ve been off the meat for a long time. I did have a kind of a relapse and I didn’t feel any better, so I’m back off it again”
