Alan Cumming is a vegan Scottish actor, author and activist who has appeared in numerous films, television shows and stage productions. He became well-known in the UK through the long-running soap Take the High Road, and later co-wrote and starred in the comedy The High Life. He has since appeared in major Hollywood films including GoldenEye and X2, and won new audiences worldwide for his role in the CBS drama The Good Wife, as well as presenting The Traitors.

Cumming has been vegetarian since 2010 and became vegan in 2012 after making it his New Year’s resolution to remove all animal products from his diet. He has spoken about veganism as an act of compassion, encouraging others to make the change and saying: “Don’t be ridiculous. Just do it. It’s so easy!”

As well as living vegan, Cumming uses his platform to support animal-friendly campaigns. In 2020, he teamed up with vegan organisations to deliver plant-based pies to people experiencing homelessness through The Care Hub in Aberdeen. He has also worked with animal rights groups on campaigns promoting veganism and challenging cruelty in the food industry

“I just don’t like meat. Rotten carcasses don’t feel good inside in my body. I’ve also seen some horrible documentaries about the hormones and things that go into meat. On a health level, meat is so scary.”1Kaminer, M. 2011. One on one with Alan Cumming. Vegetarian Times.
