Anabelle Broadbent made a clean sweep at the 2024 Puerto Rico Masters Association National Championships.

The vegan food scientist was competing in six events in the women’s 55-59 age category. Last year she won three of six, but this year she had other plans.

Anabelle took gold in the 100 metres, 200 metres, 400 metres, 800 metres, 1,500 metres and 5,000 metres. That’s six events and six gold medals! Her competitors must have been sick of seeing her on the start line!

And Anabelle accomplished all this in gruelling weather conditions:

“The race conditions between 8 am and 1 pm were brutal. The combination of heat, humidity, and burning bright sunshine were the worst I have ever experienced. That was so hard! During my last two events, the skies turned dark, and I heard thunder. Strong thunderstorms and heavy rain came through the area, forcing the cancellation of the relays and javelin events.”

The experienced athlete used her background in food science to her advantage:

“My nutrition and recovery strategy were on point! Before, during and after each event! My hydration strategy was on point! This is where my food and nutrition science expertise become a competitive advantage.”

Anabelle has been vegan since 2010:

“I want to inspire others to eat wisely, make healthier food choices (eat more plants!) and move more (stay physically active!). Eat wisely for your health, the health of the planet, and for the animals.”
