Gasping for Life

The Truth About the Chicken on Your Plate

In the UK, over ONE BILLION chickens are slaughtered every year – and 78 per cent of them will die painfully in a gas chamber:

  • 77% of chickens bred for meat
  • 99.6% of egg laying hens
  • nearly all male chicks in the egg industry

Is gassing painful?

Yes, no matter how much the meat and egg industries may claim otherwise. Carbon dioxide gassing kills chickens by starving their brains of oxygen. In the lead-up to death, it forms a painful acidic layer on their eyes, throat and lungs – making them feel like they’re burning from the inside out. Chickens scream in fear, panic and thrash violently trying to escape the gas chamber.

We’re told Britain has the best welfare standards in the world, but do we?

Is chicken gassing illegal?

The UK Government’s own advisory body said animal gassing should be phased out within five years – over 20 years ago. More recently, in 2020, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) declared it a “serious welfare concern” due to the pain and distress it causes.

Do you love animals?
