Zacchary Bird is an Australian recipe creator and food writer who describes himself as “the vegan butcher, baker and trouble maker.”

Zacchary has written three cookbooks. In 2020, he published ‘Vegan Junk Food: A Down and Dirty Cookbook’, followed by ‘The Vegan Butcher: The ultimate guide to plant-based meat’ in 2021. In 2023, he published ‘The Vegan Baker: The ultimate guide to plant-based breads, pastries, donuts, cookies, cakes & more’. ‘The Vegan Butcher’ won the PETA Best Vegan Cookbook 2021 award.

Zacchary became vegetarian when he was 12 years old and later made the switch to vegan:

“I actually went vegetarian when I was about 12 years old and I just never thought about it again. So I was just like a lot of vegetarians, eating nothing but dairy and thinking I was having a really good time. But I actually went plant-based when I started to realise that the dairy and egg industry was just as naughty as the other industries. The quote that sticks with me is: ‘the dairy industry is the meat industry with a couple of extra steps beforehand’, so that’s what really struck me. It wasn’t until someone asked me that I realised I had never articulated it before – so I’m a huge advocate for talking and asking questions.”
