What Do You Really Know About Dairy?

You’ve been deceived about dairy your entire life.

What Do You Really Know About Dairy? is now in production. Viva!’s groundbreaking documentary exposes the cruelty, health myths and industry spin behind one of Britain’s most heavily promoted foods. With your support, we can make sure millions of people see the truth.

Through expert testimony, original and undercover footage, forensic analysis of industry claims, and candid vox pops with the British public, Viva!’s documentary will reveal how consumers have been misled about dairy, exposing the hidden realities, debunking long-held myths and confronting the lies that have shaped the nation’s views for generations.

But making the film is only half the battle. We need your help to make sure the truth about dairy reaches as many people as possible.

A message from Juliet Gellatley

“Making the documentary is only half the battle. Real change happens when millions of people see it. From this point onwards, every donation will help us secure wider distribution, targeted advertising, media coverage and screenings across the UK and internationally. Around six billion people drink milk globally because they believe what this immensely powerful industry has told them – that it is natural, necessary and kind. They urgently need to see what lies behind the marketing.”

For decades, the dairy industry has told us:

you need milk to build strong bones

dairy is essential in a healthy diet

cows live happy, natural lives

drinking milk is natural and normal

None of this holds up to scrutiny.

01

“But don’t cows need to be milked?”

The animal welfare lie

The animal welfare lie

Before a cow produces milk, she has to give birth.

That means:

  • she is repeatedly made pregnant
  • her calf is taken away at just a few hours old
  • the milk she produces is not destined for her baby – but for human profit
  • she is made pregnant again while still being milked
  • dairy cows are pushed so hard their bodies break down, causing:
    • lameness and nerve damage
    • painful mastitis infections
    • emaciation and total physical exhaustion

Most don’t live beyond a few years. The public has been sold images of green fields and happy cows. We will show them the truth.

02

“I thought milk was good for bones?”

The health lie

You’ve heard it your whole life:

“Milk is good for you; it builds strong bones.”

Wrong.

  • Dairy is not essential for good bone health
  • Dairy contains no fibre – most Brits don’t get enough
  • Butter, cream and high-fat cheeses are loaded with saturated fat – the kind that raises the risk of heart disease and stroke
  • Most of the world’s people struggle to digest lactose – the sugar in milk
  • Milk can legally contain up to 400,000 somatic cells (immune cells found in pus) per millilitre

So why are we still being told we need it? This film will put the health claims under the spotlight and ask leading experts to explain what dairy really does – and does not – do for our bodies.

“But isn’t dairy natural?”

Cow in pain

The dairy is natural lie

  • There is nothing natural about drinking milk beyond weaning, especially the breast milk of another species
  • There is nothing natural about taking a calf from their mother so humans can consume the milk intended for that baby
  • And there is nothing natural about an industry that has turned motherhood into a production system

This film will challenge one of the deepest assumptions in our culture: that dairy is normal

Because once people understand what dairy actually is, many will never look at milk, cheese or yoghurt the same way again.

Why this film matters

Filming is now well underway, but for this documentary to create real change, it needs to be seen by as many people as possible.

With your support, we can take this groundbreaking film beyond production and into cinemas, living rooms, news stories and social media feeds, reaching mainstream audiences with the truth about an industry built on animal suffering.

Together, we can ensure millions of people see what the dairy industry doesn’t want them to see.

We’ve done it before
