The overuse of antibiotics on livestock and fish farms is one of the main drivers of the evolution of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
This made the headlines in The Telegraph recently, which means that the Government has committed to phase out the breeding of fast-growing chickens for meat, otherwise known as broilers.
The links between the two are clearly spelt out by Emanuel Goldman, Professor of Microbiology, Rutgers-New Jersey Medical School, Newark, USA – and his conclusions are stark.
The overuse of antibiotics in humans and animals has led to the emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria or ‘superbugs’.
