  • The cookery demonstration will be led by experienced Somerset-based caterer, Anna Madams

A unique vegan Demo and Dine event will be coming to Taunton for the first time this month (23 October). Attendees will be shown how to prepare a vegan version of the nation’s favourite meal: a roast dinner with all the trimmings.

A staple of the week, a roast dinner is one of the most common meals that chefs are asked to ‘veganise’. Leading UK vegan charity Viva! has taken on the task of helping people create the perfect vegan roast dinner, by hosting this afternoon of culinary education.

Guests will be taught how to create a Squash, Spinach and Pumpkin Seed Filo Pie with all the trimmings. This show-stopping dish is designed as an alternative to meat, with no cruelty involved, but plenty of flavour.

The cookery demonstration will be conducted by local chef Anna Madams of the popular Somerset-based catering company Vegan To You. Anna is an experienced restaurateur, having catered for hundreds of weddings and special events.

After the cookery demonstration, attendees will be served one of the delicious filo pies, along with all the traditional roast trimmings: roast potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, steamed broccoli, orange and thyme carrots, braised red cabbage and gravy.

On the topic of creating the perfect vegan roast, Anna Madams said: “I often get contacted by non-vegans in a bit of a panic as they are having vegans over for Sunday lunch and don’t know where to start! The Squash, Spinach and Pumpkin Seed Filo Pie not only looks really impressive, but it’s also super easy once you know how, and all the ingredients are readily available in supermarkets.”

Founder and international director of Viva!, Juliet Gellatley, said: “We created this event to help people understand that veganism isn’t about missing out: you can still enjoy delicious flavours and take part in traditions like a Sunday roast. Not only is this pie mouthwateringly tasty, but it’s also healthier than meat, better for the environment and, of course, better for the animals. Everyone is welcome along to this event whether you’re a meat-eater, vegan, vegetarian or just curious about plant-based food.”

Admission to this event (including lunch) costs £12, and tickets can be purchased from the Viva! website

When: Sunday, 23 October 2022. Doors open at 12.30pm for 1pm start.

Where: Taunton Catholic Centre, The Mount, Taunton TA1 3NR.
