Half of all dairy cows are impregnated with bull semen from a beef breed. The bigger, bulkier calves often lead to painful birthing difficulties for the cow, resulting in permanent nerve damage and an inability to control her hind legs. To prevent her from doing the splits she’s fitted with metal shackles and the perpetual milking cycle continues.
