Justin Hawkins – The Darkness
Justin Hawkins is an English musician and the flamboyant frontman of the rock band The Darkness. The Darkness burst onto the music scene with the award-winning debut album, Permission to Land, which debuted at number two on the UK charts before ascending to number one for four weeks. The third single from the album, ‘I Believe in a Thing Called Love’, was a massive hit for the band and cemented their place in rock history. The band split up in 2006 only to reunite five years later in 2011. In 2021, Hawkins launched a YouTube channel, Justin Hawkins Rides Again, where he talks “about new music, very old music, the music industry and what’s going on in the world of rock and roll in general.” The channel has over 572,000 subscribers.
Hawkins told Peta that he “met and married a vegan lady” who educated him about the injustices to animals in the food system. Together, they now have an entirely vegan family. He also says that, as a singer, dairy gave him too much mucus so he’s been drinking soya milk “since the beginning of time.”
“There’s a lot of substitutes that do similute meat but there’s also some brilliant vegetables that mother nature’s invented so I don’t think there’s any excuses really. It’s not challenging, it’s not that difficult. There’s going to come a time when everybody has to be vegan. I don’t think there’s going to be an alternative. Just embrace it… because otherwise it’s the end of the world and the alternative doesn’t bear thinking about.” – Justin Hawkins
