Ruby Rose is an Australian actor, model and presenter who broke through internationally after playing Stella Carlin in Orange Is the New Black. She later moved into action and franchise work, including John Wick: Chapter 2, Pitch Perfect 3 and the lead role in Batwoman, where she became the first openly lesbian actor to headline a live-action superhero series as the title character.

Rose began her journey to veganism in 2013. Despite some initial health hurdles, she managed to overcome them and ditched meat and dairy.1Flink, T. 2021.Vegan Actor Ruby Rose Reveals Her Plant-Based Food Staples. Live Kindly. Learning about the cruel production of shark fin soup also helped turn Ruby vegan.2Cappiello, J. 2018. Ruby Rose Explains Why She Went Vegan on #SharkWeek Episode. Mercy for Animals. Her public comments have also connected vegan choices to climate concerns. In 2017, she urged people to go vegan or vegetarian in response to political rollbacks on climate policy, framing food choices as direct climate action.

She has worked with PETA on anti-fur messaging through its “I’d Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur” campaign, appearing in a Maxim Australia photo spread tied to the campaign. She has also been recognised by PETA in its annual celebrity features, including being named one of its “sexiest vegan” winners in 2017. Outside campaigning, Rose has promoted cruelty-free beauty and highlighted vegan product ranges through her partnership work with Urban Decay, citing the brand’s animal-testing stance and vegan line.

“May I suggest turning vegan or at least vegetarian? We can be the change.”1Flink, T. 2021.Vegan Actor Ruby Rose Reveals Her Plant-Based Food Staples. Live Kindly. Available: https://www.livekindly.co/vegan-actor-ruby-rose-reveals-her-plant-based-food-staples/ [Accessed 10 March 2021].

“I used to get something called “shark fin soup and I didn’t know. … I said to my mom, ‘Wait, is this made out of an actual shark’s fin?’ and she was like, ‘Oh no, darling, of course not’ … I later found out that it was and ended up being so sad that I cried for three weeks. … I thought that it was even worse that they just cut the fins off and the sharks were out there not able to move. … That really scared me and I used to have nightmares that they were finless in the ocean and I couldn’t eat any fish ever again.”2Cappiello, J. 2018.
