Vanessa Drew-Fugler
Why I am vegan
I chose this path out of compassion and respect for all living beings. Over time, I came to understand that animals, like us, experience fear, joy and pain – and that my daily choices could either contribute to their suffering or help reduce it.
Becoming vegan was a natural extension of my values: kindness, fairness and care for the planet. It’s about living in alignment with what I believe – that no creature should be harmed for my comfort or convenience.
It’s also about sustainability. The more I learned about the environmental impact of animal agriculture – from deforestation to water use and emissions – the more I realised that a plant-based lifestyle is one of the most effective ways to protect our shared home.
For me, being vegan isn’t about restriction; it’s about connection – to animals, to the Earth and to a gentler way of living.
About my materials
Art is how I express compassion, connection and reverence for life. It allows me to translate feelings that words can’t hold – the beauty of nature, the resilience of animals and the fragile balance of our shared world. Creating art brings me solace and joy. It’s both a refuge and a form of activism – a way to celebrate the harmony that’s possible when we live with empathy and respect for all beings. I create using ethically made, vegan materials that reflect my commitment to sustainability and kindness. My current series explores exoplanets transformed into Exo-plants – imagined worlds where nature and consciousness intertwine, offering a vision of life beyond Earth that mirrors our own planet’s fragility and wonder. Through my work, I hope to remind others of our deep interconnectedness with the Earth and its creatures. Each piece is a quiet call for awareness, peace and compassion – values that guide every part of my life.
Why I support Viva’s Art for Animals project
I support Viva’s Art for Animals project because it unites creativity with compassion – two forces that can truly inspire change. Art has the power to move hearts and open minds, and Viva’s mission aligns perfectly with my own belief that empathy for animals should be at the centre of how we live.
This project gives artists a voice to speak for those who cannot, using beauty and imagination to raise awareness about animal suffering and the hope of a kinder world. By supporting it, I feel part of a collective effort to create understanding through art – to show that compassion is not only ethical, but deeply human.
