The UN is warning of an approaching global water crisis because of pollution, climate change and over-consumption. Their report, published ahead of the first dedicated water summit in more than 40 years, says that around 10 per cent of the world’s population lives under ‘water stress’ – when demand exceeds availability.

More than one in four people in the world lack access to safe drinking water while 3.6 billion lack sanitation services. The crisis is worst in low-income countries – for example, 70 per cent of people in sub-Saharan Africa lack access to safe drinking water. Agriculture is the single biggest global consumer of freshwater, using 70 per cent, much of which is used to grow animal feed. A global shift away from meat and dairy could free significant water resources.
