Ear infection

The most common type of ear infection (otitis media) affects the middle ear, the space between the eardrum and the inner ear. Ear infections are common in childhood and can be extremely painful causing a considerable amount of distress. Complications of ear infections are less common than they were in the past but it can be a serious problem; glue ear is the most common cause of hearing loss in childhood.

Ear infections are often associated with colds but can also be linked to hay fever and food allergies. Children with ear problems may also have a food allergy. Common culprits include: cow’s milk, wheat, egg whites, peanuts and soya. Many children respond well to eliminating the offending food but the ear problem may reoccur if the food that caused it is eaten again.
