We are the Vegans

A poem By marcello

We are the vegans, kind and caring,
Saving animals big and small, dangerous or not, we are the vegans picking them up off the floor,
So they don’t die anymore.

In just America, more than 20 million chickens die a day,
That’s not good, you wouldn’t want to die.

Cows and burgers? They don’t match,
Maybe give them a hug or a snack.

A pig in a pie? You horrid guy, they want to live not die.
Would you want to be a human pie?

We are the vegans, clever and great.
Some people are scared of animals like snakes,
But they’re going to be more scared of you than you are of them for we are much bigger.

We are the vegans, kind and good,
Stopping pollution and forest fires too,
Standing in justice – this is my belief:
That humans and animals should all have peace.

Marcello feeding chickens at The Base Vegan Retreat Animal Sanctuary

Marcello read his poem to his whole school, believing it wouldn’t reach the school’s festival final because of its topic – he simply wanted everyone to hear it and think.

He says: “I am nine and I have been vegan all my life. I like helping animals and seeing them in nature, I like encouraging people to be kind to animals by not eating them and helping little insects too. I like to show people vegans are strong and kind because I do Tang Soo Do and skateboarding and love adventures.”

Marcello chose this photo of himself at The Base Vegan Retreat Animal Sanctuary in Bristol. It was taken on the day his class had a school trip to the zoo – a trip he refused to attend – so instead, Marcello visited The Base Retreat with his family.
