Vegan becomes women’s British powerlifting champion
Vegan Sophia Ellis powers her way to British top spot.
It seems like vegans are becoming unstoppable in bodybuilding and powerlifting competitions. The days of asking “where do you get your protein?” are going to be a thing of the past if the likes of Sophia Ellis continue to dominate the sport.
After a three-month break from competition to recover from a knee injury, Brit Sophia Ellis returned to the stage in top form at the British Powerlifting Championships. Competing in the 76 kg class, she lifted a total of 533 kg – consisting of a 170 kg squat, a record-breaking 125.5 kg bench press, and 237.5 kg deadlift. The incredible performance gave her her fifth national title, breaking her own national record in the bench press in the process.
Reflecting on her performance after the event, she said:
“I’m nowhere near my best or what I’m capable of, but I knew going into this that I’d be taking a hit on squats in order to keep myself in one piece. I’m genuinely so happy with my performance after all that I’ve dealt with and most importantly, enjoyed the competition.”
Sophia has been vegan since 2011, initially for health reasons but the more she looked into veganism, the more her eyes opened to the ethical and environmental side of this lifestyle, she told Great Vegan Athletes.
