Our latest petition calls on the UK Government to add warning labels to some meat products, in an effort to raise awareness of the major health concerns which come with the consumption of processed and red meat.
In 2015, the World Health Organisation (WHO) classified processed meat, such as bacon, ham and sausages, as a Group 1 carcinogen – meaning it causes cancer in humans. Red meat, including beef, pork and lamb, was classified as Group 2A – meaning probably carcinogenic.
These conclusions came after decades of global research by leading scientists. Yet, most people remain unaware of the serious health risks linked to meat.
It’s estimated that 13 per cent of bowel cancer cases in the UK are caused by eating processed meat.*
Just like cigarette packaging, processed and red meat products should carry clear health warnings – so consumers can make informed choices. A simple label stating “May Cause Cancer” could help raise awareness and protect public health.
We are calling on the UK Government to make this a legal requirement.
Sign the petition now to demand mandatory health warnings on processed and red meat.
