More Than Half our ‘Meat’ Won’t Come From Animals by 2040, Report Says

Veganism has boomed in the past few years, with more people and companies turning towards a more compassionate way of living than ever before.

Finding vegan options in restaurant chains and supermarkets is now as easier than ever, but a new report suggests not only will vegan meat alternatives continue improving over the coming years; it will actually replace animals on supermarket shelves.

According to global consultancy firm, AT Kearney, 60 per cent of ‘meat’ eaten will be replaced with alternatives to animal-derived products by 2040.

The change is led by consumer driven demand for realistic meat alternatives such as Beyond Meat’s products and the development of lab-grown meat.

Consumers are becoming more concerned with animal welfare, their own health and the environmental cost of animal agriculture, leading them to lean towards a vegan lifestyle says the report.

“The large-scale livestock industry is viewed by many as an unnecessary evil,” said the report. “With the advantages of novel vegan meat replacements and cultured meat over conventionally produced meat, it is only a matter of time before they capture a substantial market share.”

And even avid carnivores will move towards more ethical ‘meat’, according to the report, as alternatives to animal products become increasingly realistic.

“For passionate meat-eaters, the predicted rise of cultured meat products means that they still get to enjoy the same diet they always have, but without the same environmental and animal cost attached.”

The report estimates 35 percent of all ‘meat’ will be cultured (lab grown) by 2040 and 25 percent will be made from vegan replacements, noting that vegan alternatives will be essential in the transition away from animal products as cultured meat slowly enters the market.
