Death By Chocolate anti-dairy campaign hits Bristol streets
ANIMAL lovers from Bristol will be taking part in a national Day of Action to raise awareness of the death of male calves in the dairy industry tomorrow (Thursday, September 29).
Members of veggie group Viva!, based in Stokes Croft, will be holding a peaceful demonstration with banners and leafleting in Broadmead, by Tesco, on the corner of Union Street.
At noon they will be staging a farmer shooting a calf*, as a photo opportunity.
The group will be joined across the country by fellow Viva! supporters, as part of their Death By Chocolate campaign, which recently exposed the shooting of baby calves, torn from their mothers at birth, by South West dairy farms supplying confectionery giant Cadbury. This included Harwood Gate Farm, Little Sodbury, near Chipping Sodbury in Gloucestershire.
Despite the myth of contentment, dairy cows are the hardest worked of all farmed animals. She nurtures a growing baby inside her while simultaneously producing unnaturally high quantities of milk - up to 39 litres at a time.
Kat Affleck, Viva! campaigner says: To keep the flow going, she is forcibly impregnated every year and her babies are taken away a day or two after birth - year after year.
One hundred thousand male calves each year get shot (or killed in another manner) or are dead at birth. That means in the last decade a million male calves have died unnecessarily, all for the production of milk and dairy products. People need to be made aware of this and that there are cruelty-free alternatives.

The bloody secrets held by Cadbury were revealed recently by Bristol-based animal group Viva!, who covertly filmed dairy cattle at numerous South West dairies supplying the company, including Harwood Gate Farm, Little Sodbury.
A film showing a baby calf being callously shot here had over 36,000 hits on YouTube. View our footage.
