Traditional English tearoom in 18th Century building. Two floors, log fires, garden

Cafe

Gillams

Ulverston

FOOD
Vegetarian/vegan dishes clearly labelled
Vegetarian cheese (without animal rennet) used for vegetarian dishes
Approx no of vegetarian dishes: 10
Approx no of vegan dishes: 8
Type of dishes on offer: The cafe offers a simple lunch menu including baked potatoes, sandwiches, toasties and cakes. There are daily specials some of which were vegan ( or had a vegan option). The lunch options included more than just hummus (!) and included a rather fabulous vegan coleslaw. The owner is a strict vegetarian. The associated shop sells vegan supplies, homemade vegan cakes and a selection of veggie/vegan pasties. The food is all ( I think) organic and largely locally soured. There is also a dinner menu but we didn't try that !

DRINK
Will provide soya milk
Offer fair-trade drinks
Offer organic drinks
Licensed to sell alcohol

COMMENTS
This was a really unexpected find. We struggled in the Lakes to find vegan food and had only gone to Ulverston to buy supplies from the health food shop. However, the quaint old world appearance of this award winning coffee shop ( and a glorious coffee menu) drew us in. Once in we found the warmth of the welcome irresistable and went in three further times over the course of our time in the lakes.

We also stocked up on beautiful gifts for friends including organic loose teas and vegan tiffin and pasties for our journey home. Not to mention a kilo of the amazing organic Sumatran coffee...

This is a great traditional tearoom ( the type the lakes is famous for) with strong vegetarian/vegan options. The warm, welcoming and knowledgeable staff ( no " I'll need to check with chef...") are great. We actually wish we lived closer !
